Cultural Difference?

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

I am a german american living in socal. And people make fun of the fact that my opa fought in WWII for nazi germany. He himself was not a nazi. And so they call me a nazi just becuz i am proud of my heritage. Now if someone were to make fun of mexicans or the chinese they would get all defensive, but sense not many people in Socal are german i have no support. WOUld this happen in places in the east coast like pennsylvania?

this does not happen on the east coast. Plus u can not count ur grandfather as a Nazi. A Nazi is a political party that took over Germany. It does nothing with race issues what so ever. Every culture has something bad.

Russians- wet crazy with communism
Jews- fascist and is currently doing genocide to Palestinians
Cuban- try to buy nukes
British- snooty

——–

There are ignorant people everywhere who will insult you for no good reason. No one should seriously consider you responsible for anything that your ancestors did, no matter what the nature of the action was.

Since I’ve only visited — and never lived in Socal — I can’t comment on how judgmental people there may be. But I can tell you that you are more likely to find people tolerant of your situation where there are more people of backgrounds similar to yours — and there are plenty of people of German heritage in Pennsylvania (and Maryland).

Can I eat milk and cheese?

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Im a vegetarian but eating milk and cheese doesnt bother me like meat.

Maybe I’m drawing too much from this, but if it didn’t bother you in some way, why are you asking the queston?

There’s no doubt that the dairy industry is linked to animal suffering as much as the meat industry, and nutritionally and environentally, is as questionable as the meat industry. Worth thinking about why it doesn’t bother you I think.

Dairy products are included in an ovo-lacto vegetarian diet, but it may surprise you to learn that dairy and eggs are even crueler than meat. The sons of dairy cows become veal calves.

I think my cousin is bulimic???????

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

my cousin is 16, and since Christmas she has lost tremendous weight, and she usually stays with my family in the summer because she likes to hang out with my sister. ive notice that she had been taking showers every night and goes to the bathroom and she eats a lot to. just yesterday because she ate a huge bowl full of chocolate ice cream when no one was home except me, and took a shower right away. im about 80% sure she is throwing up after her meals. how can i make sure? and if she is what do i do? and how can i stop here.? also she has been very depressed.

any help would be appreciated

You can try confronting her. Choose your words very carefully. Maybe start by saying that your concerned that she lost so much weight. Ask her if she is depressed. Tell her you love her and she can trust you. Then you can go from there.

People with eating disorders see themselves as fat no matter what anyone tells them.

After you confront her she will hide things even more. Give her a little more time and try to confront her again. The first thing is to gain her trust.

If none of that works and your still concerned you must tell your family and hers for help. It is a very dangerous disorder and can kill her. This might to much to do on your own. But if she trust you she may confide in you and welcome some help.

It may help to educate yourself a little bit. Here is a link that may help you.

http://www.mamashealth.com/bulimia.asp

Take care and never give up!

………….

The only way to be sure is to ask her about it. I know it’s hard to confront someone about a difficult problem like this but I really think it’s the best. Let her know that you are concerned about her and only have her best interests in mind.

……..

I think you need to have her eat over at your house, and lock the bathroom, and she will suffur big time if she cant get the food out, if she looses to much, she is a goner

….

first of all, you need to talk to her seriously. tell her that you are concerned about her, and would like to talk to her privately. if she wants to talk, then you can ask her directly about your suspicion. if she doesn’t want to talk, tell her that you sensed some issues, and think that she needs help. tell her that you are available and would like to talk when she is ready.

ask her directly if she is having problem with her eating pattern / behaviour. she needs to admit that she has a problem before any changes can take place. the first step is to acknowledge that she has a problem, and she needs help. you cannot help her if she is still in denial.

bulimic pt requires treatment and counseling. it is not something that you can help her at home. what you can do is to help her to open up and seek for help. you can also let her know that it is a common and serious problem if she let herself to get worse. let her know that you are there to help her.

……………….

The wise move here is to speak with your cousin directly about it. Tell her what you have noticed, and that you are deeply concerned for her health. Ask her if she has considered getting treatment, and come armed with some ideas (e.g., getting help from parents, speaking with counselor at school). Encourage her to talk with her parents about it. Offer to be there with her to support her when she does so.

Best of luck,
~M~

p.s. If she will not agree to tell her parents, and you are certain she is binging and purging - here is the hard part - you will need to go ahead and tell her parents yourself. Bulimia is deadly, and rarely (if ever) remits on its own. Your cousin needs professional help. You wouldn’t want the death of your cousin on your conscience. Although she may be angry at first, it is better to accept that angry for a time than to attend her funeral (yes, I am serious).

…………..

This is a toughie, if your cousin is bulimic she will need some professional help. Does she drink alot of water, especially during meals?

I don’t wish to sound patronising but not sure if you are aware of not but bulimia/eating disorders are not about food, there will be underlying issue as to why she acts in this way, usually total lack of self worth.

I think the best way to approach the convo with your cousin would be in a non-confrontatial way, you could start by talking about easting disorders in general and bring into the convo about how understanding you are with this issue, ask your cousin for her opionions and mention it you could give any advise to someone with a ED it would be to see their GP.

It will be a long journey and difficult but it is worth the effort.

I have been bulimic for the past 8yrs and in theraphy for the past year.

Can you explain ” Banded iron formation ” ?

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Banded iron formations are very large bodies of sedimentary rock laid down some 2.5 billion years ago. At that time, the Earth still had its original atmosphere of nitrogen and carbon dioxide. That would be deadly for us but it was hospitable to many different microorganisms in the sea, including the first photosynthesizers. These organisms gave off oxygen as a waste product, which immediately bonded with the abundant dissolved iron to yield minerals like magnetite and hematite.

Is there any way to know if a seed is good without planting it?

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

I have done some research and it seems to me that the only general way to know if a seed (or seeds) is good is to actually try and germinate it. If it grows, it is good; if it does not grow, it is not good. Is this acurate? Is there any other way to know if a seed will be good?

For some kinds of seeds, density is a good way of telling. Many seeds don’t develop fully and consist of just the seed coat and no embryo inside. Often these seeds are indistinguishable from healthy seeds. If the seeds are added to a container of water, the good seeds will be denser and sink to the bottom. The bad seeds will float to the top. Even bad seeds which sink can be separated if the water is swirled. The good, dense seeds accumulate in the center and the lighter, bad seeds swirl around over them. The lighter seeds can be poured off, leaving mostly seeds which will germinate. This is a good technique to use with most vegetable seeds, especially tomato seeds.

Whos in the wrong; me or her?!?

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Yesterday I split my head open becuase my sister kept shouting to me ‘go and get the dog before he runs out the house so i panicked and ran, feel over and slammed my head and i have a hugeee bump on my head and i was crying saying to my sister ‘courtney i split my head open, omg i think i’m going to die, go and get mum please do something. she was writing something down, as i was crying saying please help, she didn’t even look around, then i said to her you ‘fat ***** get mum’ cause i knew if i said ‘fat *****’ (what was mean) she would have listened, guess what.. she started screaming at me ‘you c.u/\/t, fk you b!.tch blah blah and theres me with a broken head i couldn’t even speak, i can’t believe she ignored me the whole time. and then today my brother said to me playing around ‘you wothless sla.g, she didn’t know it was a joke and she was laughingg so much :| she seems to hate me for no reason. whenever my younger brother calls my sister names i act like his calling me names and shout at him and get mad, basically like i care if he calls her names, if he says stuff about me she just laughs. she only cares about herself. isn’t this bad?

were both 16 years old

y dont u pound them both? it wouldnt be that hard…hehe just get something metal….happy pounding =]]]]

……………

doesn’t matter about the name calling, she should have gotten your mom as soon as you asked, it could have been more serious than you know.

………….

Both wrong for swearing. But you were more in the wrong for the following reasons:
1) It’s not her fault you fell down. You fell down on your own.
2) If you were well enough to scream at your sister, I’m sure you were well enough to find your mom (you said you had only a bump on your head). Sure it would have been nice and the “right” thing to do of your sister, but she doesn’t have to with your type of injury. (If you were literally bleeding to death and covered with blood, then it’s a different story).
3) You started the insults.
Basically all your sister did was tell you to get the dog (which you yourself could have refused) and play poor samaritan.
If you didn’t start the swearing, I’d say she was more wrong than you. You’re both 16. You’ll have fights. Fighting and arguing is normal between siblings, but try not to swear at each other. Where do you think your brother learned to swear at you and your sister? Exactly.

Why does consumer conservation cause higher prices every single time?

Monday, July 28th, 2008

The City of Long Beach California has just announced the raising of water prices by 20% beginning this fall. Reason given the conservation efforts in saving water by the citizens of the city have so drastically reduced their income from the sale of water they now need to raise prices to restore the cities income to previous levels. The same thing happened a couple of years ago with natural gas. So if we get charged more for conserving why should people conserve. Also our mayor was one of the three energy company leaders that helped set up deregulation in California and allowed the Enron scam to happen.

Because the utilities have a huge fixed cost infrastructure that needs to be maintained. This take a certain amount of funds. when conservation methods are used, the utilities revenues are decreased, but they still have this enormous outlay of cash they have to make to keep the utilities flowing.

Another way to look it is from a supply and demand perspective. some people will say, well demand has decreased, so therefore price should decrease, but that isn’t really the case.

What in fact has happened is demand has increased and increasing demand caused the conservation initiatives in the first place. If measures were not taken, then demand would have exceeded supply. This is why conservation was required. Everyone needs utilities, but the amount they need varies, and there is certainly a lot of waste.

The utility companies have been rather stupid from a Public Relations perspective. They should have raised prices to control demand initially, and then implemented a conservation strategy in order to reduce households’ monthly bill to previous levels. Then everyone would have been happier.

——

THis is not a scam.. or anything else.. and you are generalizing the facts.

The City is raising water prices because 1) Utilities have a very large fixed cost structure that they have to spread across lower water uses and 2) as water becomes scarcer their cost of alternate sources of water is more expensive. I would bet that your cost of water would gone up a lot more if the City’s residents did not conserve as much.

California has had years of drought.. if you do not think that has affected prices and the need for conservation .. think again. We cannot continue to use resources indiscriminately.

———

The higher prices remind people of the worth of the resource, and because it affects them in such a direct manner they are encouraged to take measures to conserve and reduce their bill. It’s been effective before, and will have the desired results to some degree this time, too.

It is one tool to help ensure that a growing state population and limited resources will be available to all who need it. Rainfall, snowpack, underground aquifers, SWP, CWP — it’s a complicated situation complicated further by drought and concerns over providing for a reliable longterm water supply for new development. Agriculture in the Central Valley has received cutbacks which will entail a switch to less water-intensive crops.

A few sites from the Metropolitan Water District to help give you some background. I don’t know if they still do water tours, but I took a few about 10 years ago and they were very informative, and I can’t look at an aquaduct or pumping station the same since.
