Teen uses GarageBand, MacBook to record album
Friday, December 19th, 2008I’ve had the opportunity to meet and talk music with some great talents in the music industry. Little did I know that a young talent lived only a couple of miles from my house in Bedford, Nova Scotia.
Sixteen year old songwriter Richard Wile contacted me on Facebook after seeing an article a local newspaper did about me last week. A Mac user himself, Wile asked if I would take a listen to a new album he just released.
I’m not quite sure what I expected, but a soulful blues-based album would not be on the top of my list. That, however, is just what I got.
The instrumental album features Wile playing guitar and bass and his girlfriend Taylor Sutherland playing keyboards. He also plays trumpet, harmonica, mandolin, and banjo, as well as dabbles in keyboards and piano. All of the other instruments on the album, including drums and percussion, came from GarageBand’s Jam Packs.
Wile recorded and mixed the entire album using GarageBand, Native Instruments’ Guitar Rig (to model his guitar tone), and a MacBook that he has set up in his basement.
“I wouldn’t even bother getting into that [using a PC],” said Wile. “As soon as I opened GarageBand I was making music right away.”
The tune that started it all is a song called “Letters to John,” which he started almost three years ago. The song is inspired by one of his musical heros, John Lennon.
The bluesy music he wrote was understandable after talking to him about his influences: Eric Clapton, R.E.M., Cream, The Police, John Lennon, The Killers, and James Taylor topped the list.
Wile has 30 guitars, including a few Gibson Les Pauls and Fender Strats, as well as six amps.
Wile’s album is available from iTunes and several other online music stores. On iTunes, the DRM-free album costs $7.92.
Paul McCartney, Britney Spears top “Idol” wish list
Thursday, December 18th, 2008Former Beatle Paul McCartney and pop star Britney Spears are at the top of Simon Cowell’s celebrity wish list as possible mentors on the upcoming season of “American Idol.”
But the chances of getting McCartney to appear on the most-watched American television show seem slim.
“We try every year to get Paul McCartney on but for whatever reason he won’t come on,” the British judge told reporters on a conference call on Wednesday.
Cowell said he would welcome the chance to see Spears on the show, which returns for its 8th season on Jan. 13. The singer is on a comeback roll with a No.1 album and upcoming tour after almost two years of personal woes.
“She would be first on the list. I would love to see her mentor the contestants. But if she doesn’t want to do that and she wants to come on the show to perform, I would welcome her any time,” Cowell said.
He said he would also like to see Beyonce and would welcome back singer-songwriter Lionel Richie and movie director Quentin Tarantino, who was a guest judge in 2004.
“American Idol” has produced some bonafide stars since its 2002 debut, including Grammy award winners Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.
Former contestants Jennifer Hudson and Jordin Sparks were both nominated earlier this month for Grammys.
“I absolutely love it when that happens,” Cowell said. “There is so much snobbery in the music business about what we do on this show. So I think it is fantastic.”
Racial gap in colon cancer deaths is widening
Tuesday, December 16th, 2008The racial gap in colon cancer death rates is widening, a new report says, and experts partly blame blacks’ lower screening rates and poor access to quality care.
Colon and rectal cancer death rates are now nearly 50 percent higher in blacks than in whites, according to American Cancer Society research being released Monday.
The gap has been growing since the mid-1970s, when colon cancer death rates for the two racial groups were nearly equal.
“We have seen this enormous progress in whites. We could be seeing the same progress in blacks, if we could overcome disparities in access to health care,” said Elizabeth Ward, who oversees surveillance and health policy at the cancer society.
Colorectal cancer is the third leading cancer killer in the United States. About 50,000 Americans will die of the disease this year, the cancer society estimates.
Last month, researchers reported the rate of new cancers in general is inching down and death rates continue to decline in the United States — important good news in the fight against the dreaded disease.
But when it comes to colon cancer, progress has been greater for whites than for blacks, the new report says.
The rate of diagnoses in blacks was about 19 percent higher than it was for whites in 2005, the most recent year for which statistics are available.
The death rate difference was even more pronounced. Among blacks, there were about 25 deaths per 100,000 people, compared to 17 per 100,000 in whites — a 48 percent difference.
The two groups’ death rates were similar until the 1980s when colon cancer began to kill blacks at a higher rate than whites.
Researchers say it’s not clear why black mortality jumped in the 1980s, but it started a gap that continued to widen even after the black rate began to fall again.
Colon cancer deaths can be prevented by early diagnosis through screening and quality care. The screening rate for whites is 50 percent compared to just 40 percent for blacks.
The screening rate for Hispanics is an even-lower 32 percent, but the death rate for Hispanics — fewer than 13 per 100,000 — is lower than it is for whites.
That paradox is not unique to colon cancer: Poorly insured Hispanics have fared better than whites and blacks in several measures of cancer and heart disease.
“It’s a mystery,” said Dr. Daniel Blumenthal, chair of the Morehouse School of Medicine’s Department of Community Health and Preventive Medicine.
